This post is admittedly multiple days [weeks] overdue, in part because the task at hand is nearly impossible: compiling a list of the best jeans. Period. I struggled a lot with how to divide the denim umbrella into separate categories; by fit, by price, by occasion — and have come to the conclusion that dividing it sensibly is an impossible task. I also (unfortunately) don’t own every single pair of *really* *good* *jeans* because I have neither the budget nor the closet space, but didn’t feel it was right to snub a few pairs just because I haven’t had the pleasure of making their acquaintance yet.
Denim, in my opinion, is often the hardest category to judge. While it’s relatively objective when a pair of jeans looks truly fantastic on one pair of legs, it’s not always that same pair that will look equally as fantastic on another. For this reason, denim is irritatingly subjective. While there are a few brands and styles that transcend into Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants territory, they’re few and far between.
Alas, I present you with a list of my personal favorites as well as a highly curated list compiled from data I gathered from my favorite collective (otherwise known as my IG following). I’m sure to ruffle a few feathers with my various controversial denim beliefs (new Levi’s can be just as good as old, really expensive denim can *sometimes* be worth it, the wider the jean, the more Cheetos you can eat while still looking chic) but I did my best. And if there’s one main takeaway that you haven’t already absorbed from other Substackers or IG girlies it’s to burn your skinny jeans.
*Fine print: For some of these pairs, I chose the image I thought best represented the pair (or had the least cringe-worthy styling), yet sometimes the website had sold out the majority of the size run. Therefore, if you click a link and the pair looks different, I can assure you that it is the same pair but just from a different retailer. The image shown here is an accurate representation of what they will look like when they arrive on your doorstep.
*More fine print: Some of these are affiliate links, which means I will earn a small percentage if you place an order (at no extra cost to you, how about that!!), which I am very grateful for!
Top ten brands (in your opinions), ranked from most mentioned to least:
Agolde
Toteme
Moussy Vintage
SLVRLAKE
Levi’s
Khaite
Citizens of Humanity
Goldsign
B Sides
Mother, Frame, Re/Done all tied
Now for a more in-depth look at what makes some pairs more special than others:
1. When it comes to a great everyday pair of jeans, I always lean towards a crop. I think they do wonders for elongating your leg and also let you show off your shoes (obv recommend checking the weather first, but colder temps also mean an opportunity for great socks). I love a grey or black pair because they’re more versatile (IMO). Also, everything Raey makes is an instant wardrobe staple. 2. I’ll rave about Moussy Denim in a bit, but I truly believe they are the superior jean in nearly every way. They’re flattering, they don’t stretch, and their cuts are somehow timeless while still being on trend. They’re pricey but worth it. 3. I haven’t taken these off since I purchased them (I’m wearing them now) and admittedly own them in two other colors. My boyfriend once told me they were the “tightest pants he’s ever seen me wear”, which I’m pretty (very) sure was both sarcastic and an insult, but luckily I don’t care. 4. Khaite is also a superior denim brand for similar reasons to Moussy. I love throwing these on with a casual sweater and a great boot. 5. R13 got snubbed in my pole (save for one favored follower, I salute you). These are the perfect “effortlessly distressed” pair and are a great Sunday morning errands jean. 6. I included these on my gift guide and Santa really pulled through. Levi’s can do no wrong and this wide leg hits in all the right places. 7. Another ride or die from Moussy. They’re perfect. 8. These are the favorite jeans that started it all — the Levi’s Baggy Boot. Such a good price point and also a great Khaite dupe if that’s what you’re looking for.
If any of you took a look a the above eight pairs of jeans and figured I had more than enough, think again. I’m still lusting after a few pairs, the below ones in particular:
1. I was actually surprised when a friend told me she swore by Tibi’s denim, but on further investigation it actually makes perfect sense. I love this pair and they may be a less aggressive alternative to my beloved Citizen’s Horseshoe jeans (see #4). 2. Another crowd favorite is Khaite, and while I love my Kerrie jeans I’ve also been eyeing this pair called the Danielle. 3. I’ve never met a big cuff I didn’t like, and this pair from Citizen’s of Humanity is by no means an exception. 4. Again…the Horseshoe jeans from Citizen’s. In a darker denim. My mom has these (I made her buy them) and somehow I never tired of seeing her in them every single day over the holidays which probably means I need my own pair. 5. Everyone seems to love SLVRLAKE. I also love a winter white. 6. These ripped bad boys from Khaite have been around the Instagram block but have yet to make it to my front door. I think it’s about time. 7. The B-Sides Lasso jeans are a classic. 8. Goldsign was another highly mentioned brand, and this darker pair might give my aforementioned favorites from Raey a run for their money.
Last but not least… I asked, you delivered. Here are the cult-favorites that resulted from my crowd sourcing (I picked my favorites because I’m allowed).
1. Everyone is waxing poetic about Totême, and it’s not hard to see why. Chic chic chic. 2. Moussy vintage doesn’t need any explanation, but this pair in particular is denim gold (and on sale). 3. The Levi’s 90s 501s are said to be a game changer, and I own them so I can confirm (also on sale). We love an affordable wardrobe staple. 4. The Re/Done Stovepipe jeans were also a favorite — I struggle with their sizing (I can often be a 24 and a 30 in the same day when it comes to their sizing) but I won’t knock them if you all love them. They’re definitely some good-looking jeans. 5. This might be the winner of the entire bunch: the Agolde Pinch Waist. They come in a bunch of colors but this wash is my favorite — a classic. 6. No one mentioned these, but they’re Olympia Gayot’s favorite and whatever she says goes. She is her own cult. I haven’t tried J. Crew’s denim yet but it’s only a matter of time. 7. Khaite, khaite, and more khaite. 8. Goldsign was also a favorite, and this wash feels special to me? Idk. It’s cool. It’s chic. It’s classic. The end.
